ASBESTOS FENCE REMOVAL PERTH

Asbestos Fence Removal & Replacement in Perth

If your Perth property was built before the early 1990s, there’s a real chance your boundary fencing contains asbestos. Most commonly it’s the corrugated “Super Six” style sheeting, pale grey, slightly fluted, often weathered and chalky to the touch. It looked like concrete to the homeowners who installed it. Now it’s a regulated material that has to be removed, handled, transported, and disposed of in a very specific way.

Firm Fencing has been removing and replacing asbestos boundary fencing across Perth for over 20 years. We hold a Class B asbestos removal licence issued by WorkSafe WA (licence number WR2483 ), carry full public liability and asbestos-specific insurance, and follow the procedures set out in the Code of Practice: How to Safely Remove Asbestos (Safe Work Australia, current edition) and the WA Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022.

What that means in plain language: when we remove your old fence, the fibres stay sealed, the bags go to a licensed Perth disposal facility, and the paperwork is done properly. Your replacement fence, Colorbond, timber, aluminium, or composite, goes in the same week.

Do You Have an Asbestos Fence?

Most asbestos fencing in Perth was installed between roughly 1950 and 1987. James Hardie’s “Super Six” was the dominant product, corrugated fibre cement sheeting, normally 1.5 to 1.8 metres high, fixed to timber or steel posts. If your fence matches any of these descriptions, it’s likely to contain asbestos and should be tested before removal:

  • Corrugated grey sheeting with a fluted or wavy profile, weathered to a pale, chalky surface
  • Flat fibre cement sheeting between timber posts, sometimes painted but originally grey
  • Brittle, cracked, or broken panels with frayed edges or visible fibrous material
  • Pre-1990 era property in suburbs with original housing stock (think Bayswater, Maylands, North Perth, Inglewood, Mount Lawley, Cottesloe, Yokine, Bassendean, and similar)
  • No barcode, no manufacturer stamp, modern non-asbestos fibre cement (CSR HardiFence, etc.) is always clearly marked

If you’re unsure, don’t disturb it. Even cutting, drilling, sanding, or breaking the panels releases fibres into the air. The safest course is to leave it in place until a licensed remover assesses the job, or to commission an independent asbestos sample test (around $80–150 per sample through a NATA-accredited testing laboratory).

We can arrange testing as part of your free quote if you want certainty before committing to a removal job.

Replacement Options After Removal

Most Perth homeowners replacing asbestos fencing choose one of three options. We supply and install all of them:

Colorbond steel fencing

By far the most common replacement. Durable, low-maintenance, available in 14 standard colours including Surfmist, Woodland Grey, Monument, Basalt, and Classic Cream. Typical lifespan 20–25 years. Looks clean and modern, suits almost any Perth property style.

Timber fencing

Treated pine or hardwood timber, traditional paling style. Lower upfront cost but requires periodic oiling or staining. Lifespan 8–15 years depending on timber species and maintenance. Best suited to character homes in heritage suburbs.

Aluminium slat fencing

Modern profile, low maintenance, allows light and breeze through. Popular for front fencing and increasingly for boundary applications. Higher upfront cost than Colorbond but longest lifespan (25+ years).

We can also handle hybrid solutions, for example, Colorbond on side boundaries with an aluminium slat front fence, or timber-look composite panels for clients who want the timber aesthetic without the maintenance.

Class B Asbestos Removal Licence – WR2483

Our licence is issued by the Western Australian Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS), allowing us to safely remove and dispose of eligible asbestos-containing fencing materials in accordance with WA requirements.

Unlike many fencing contractors who need to subcontract asbestos removal to a third party, Firm Fencing can manage both the asbestos fence removal and replacement process, providing homeowners with a simpler and more streamlined solution.

Choosing a licensed asbestos removal company helps ensure:

  • Safe removal procedures are followed
  • Appropriate containment methods are used
  • Asbestos waste is transported and disposed of correctly
  • Work complies with Western Australian regulations
  • Risks to homeowners, neighbours and workers are minimised

When dealing with suspected asbestos fencing, homeowners should never attempt to remove, cut, break, drill or disturb fencing materials themselves.
